Contact Us Daily Readings Parish Council Updated: August 18, 2008 ------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------- |
Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 5, 2008 Life begins. And human life never ends. “Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God.” With these words, St. Paul gives us a deep insight into how to live peacefully. He does not tell us to put on rose-colored glasses. Rather we must recognize the struggles and anxieties of life, and bring them to God. In doing so, we will come to realize the presence and strength of God. Our problems will not disappear, necessarily, but peace not anxiety will be our experience. Take Ten and reflect on Philippians 4:4-8. Rejoice! Pro-life – a word that describes who we are. We believe in the Gospel of Life. We must in every instance express in our parish and personal lives the Gospel of Life. This fundamental Christian Truth comes from the Catholic dogma of that every human being has been created in the image of God (imago Deo), therefore, every human being has dignity. This teaching is expressed in our Church’s consistent teaching in opposing abortion. The foundation of life is life. All people have the right to life. No one has the authority to terminate innocent life. I keep dreaming of the day when we will look upon abortion as we look upon slavery: A sad reality of the past. But in the meantime, we live the Gospel of life by providing the love, support and practical assistance needed by women having a difficult pregnancy. We must provide the support to families members who pressure women into having abortions (64% of American women reported that they felt pressured by others to have an abortion. Vincent M. Rue, Priscilla K. Coleman, James J. Roe, David C. Reardon, “Induced abortion and traumatic stress: A preliminary comparison of American and Russian women,” Medical Science Monitor 2004; 10(10): SR5-16.) Live the Gospel of Life. Come on out TODAY to St. Patrick and enjoy their Fall Festival. Great food, music, kid games, silent auction and more! Enjoy the great Irish hospitality of St. Patrick of Shieldsville that will be serving the best German sauerkraut in Rice County! This week we have welcomed Father Benjamin Sandoval from St. Francis of Assisi, our sister parish on Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. So far he has seen the Cathedral in St. Paul and the "Vatican Splendors" exhibit at the Minnesota History Center. He spent time with the students at DMCS and Faith Formation and celebrated Mass with the BA students on Friday. He visited a fish hatchery in Waterville. I took him to the Mississippi to view the bald eagles. He had a reunion with a member from his parish, Father Samuel Perez, who is an associate pastor in Tyler, MN. He attended the Circle of Prayer group Saturday night and has visited some businesses of Divine Mercy members. There is a reception today for him at Peichel Hall after the 11:30 am mass at Sacred Heart in collaboration with the NET Team's tamale sale. Tomorrow he may participate in the school marathon. It has been a busy week and we hope that you have had a chance to meet him. We thank Father Benjamin for coming and we wish him a safe trip home Wednesday. Please pray for St. Francis of Assisi parish as they pray for us. St. Paul Seminary will be taking up a collection next week at our masses to help support the ministry of forming and educating priests. My four years (and Father Kaluza’s 6 and Father Fernando’s 8) of seminary education to be a priest is rather specialized and therefore expensive. Also, it was through the Seminary that Father Andrew Cozzens education for an additional four years was paid. St. Paul Seminary is seeking to establish an endowment fund to help long term deal with the growing expenses. Your generosity is appreciated. Beginning today, October 5, 2008, the bishops of the Church will meet in Rome to discuss "The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church," during the 12th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops. The Synod's primary goal is "to fully encounter the Word of God in Jesus the Lord, present in the Sacred Scriptures and the Eucharist" (from the Lineamenta, of the XII General Assembly). Inspired by the words of the Second Vatican Council Constitution, Dei Verbum, the Synod seeks to make the Bible easily accessible to the faithful. This event, like Dei Verbum, is likely to be a significant moment in the history of biblical theology and study. I invite all to attend Lectio Divino, a course in learning how to pray next Saturday, October 11th at 9:15 am at Sacred Heart. Sincerely yours in Christ, Father Kevin Finnegan --------------------------------------------------- Interested in joining our parish?
