Academics
Catholic
faith The foundation of all learning at Divine Mercy Catholic School is the formal
religious instruction given daily. Students
receive sacramental preparation in second grade.
Throughout the year each grade prepares and leads the weekly celebration
of Mass. We express our Christian
values through various missions and service projects in our community and
around the world.
SERVICE
LEARNING - Divine Mercy Catholic School integrates service learning
experiences throughout a child's educational tenure with our school. From raking
leaves to cleaning garbage to raising funds monthly for organizations in need,
students learn to care for their world and the people around them as Christ
would. They also focus on the attributes of the "Fruits of the Spirit"
learning how to display these fruits to others.
Language Arts
Both traditional and multi-sensory methods are used during reading
instruction. We utilize the Project Read program in grades K-3 that teaches
students to use kinesthetic, tactile, and sequential methods to develop reading
skills. English skills, literature,
speaking, reading, and writing are integrated into our Language Arts curriculum.
Math
Our
program provides a strong foundation for critical thinking and problem solving.
Supplemented with manipulatives and problem solving activities, students
learn through applications that apply to every day situations.
Science
Students discover the world around them through hands-on experimentation,
educational field trips, and classroom instruction. Sixth grade students culminate their science experience
through participation in the annual Science Fair.
Social Studies
History past and present, along with local and current events, is brought to
life through activities that enhance daily lessons. Our social studies program expands the students knowledge
and broadens their scope of the world around them.
Music
& THEATER
Through song, note reading, and rhythm, students explore the rich
world of music. Recorders, bells, pianos, and other simple instruments are used to enhance the curriculum.
In general music, students showcase their specials talents during two school-wide
performances each year and during weekly Masses. Students are also able to
participate in theater productions and private violin and piano instruction.
Art
The
study of line, color, composition and form helps students develop fundamental
artistic skills. From sculpture to
drawing and painting, art projects are taught at each grade level and art
history and cultural arts are explored.
Physical Education
Grade appropriate skills are learned and refined throughout the program.
Body awareness, basic skills and fitness are emphasized. Student participation and inclusiveness versus competition is at the
heart of our physical education program.
Computer Technology
Our state of the art computer lab is used for classroom projects and
bi-weekly instruction. Keyboarding
skills, word processing, and using the Internet for research and resources are
key features in our technology program.
LIBRARY
- Library science is a weekly class at
DMCS where students grow in their library skills and love of reading. Led by our
part-time librarian, students experience true library time including read alouds
and library science skills as they check out their weekly library books.
