A Focus on TECHNOLOGY classES

computerAll DMCS students have weekly computer time. Kindergarten students have 1/2 hour of instruction per week and all other grades receive 1 hour per week.

What Types of Computers Do You Have? The computers in the computer lab are all Macintosh computers running OS X, the most recent operating system for Macintosh computers. All computers are networked and have access to the Internet.

Curriculum Focus: All students learn how to log on, use the mouse and keyboard, open programs, open and save documents, print and use general controls to select the programs appropriate for them.

From early on students spend time learning and developing keyboarding skills from the home row in primary grades to the entire keyboard by 4th grade. Keyboarding skills are enhanced by using Mario Teaches Typing and Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing software programs.

Students learn to use word processing, data base, spreadsheet, graphic and story writing software as well as computerized dictionaries and encyclopedias.

Students also learn to use the Internet for research and in some instances, for entertainment.

What Programs Do You Teach? Software used by students includes, but is not limited to, Appleworks, Safari, Mavis Beacon, Mario, HyperStudio, MicroWorlds, Kid Pix and numerous programs which reinforce classroom learning skills in reading, mathematics, social studies, science and thinking skills.

5th grade students have an exposure to Logo programming which introduces in a simple manner some of the basics of computer programming.
